An Exploration and Understanding of Abstract Art

Landscape Painting

This is a landscape painting class that focuses on a basic landscape painting, where methods of spatial depth, perspective and atmospheric perspective used to improve realistic representation of landscape. Students can work with preferred painting media to include watercolor acrylic or oil.

Instruction includes basic ceramic skills and techniques including; hand building, wheel throwing, and glazing techniques. Students will decide on their own projects while the instructor provides assistance to help each student achieve their goals.  This class will work with Low Fire Earthenware clay and glazes.  Clay, glazes and supplies not included.  * Tuition includes $35 in class firing fee.

Portrait Drawing from Casts, Photos, and Models

Skill Level: Designed for beginners but open to all skill levels
Learning to draw the portrait from casts and photos in a classical atelier style. This is a class for beginners and for those who need to brush up on drawing techniques such as accurate measuring and mark making. We will learn how to draw the anatomy of the head and the features in different mediums such as vine charcoal and pencil. Once we have practiced shape making and technique, we will move on to the portrait using casts, photos and clothed model. We will learn the best types of photos to use and the best method of using photos as a reference. Tuition includes model fee (one class)

5 Steps to Painting – Great for first-time painters

Skill Level: Designed for beginners but open to all skill levels
Students will use a 5 step process with a limited palette to create paintings with harmony and unity. Still life and landscapes will be the subjects, using your choice of slow drying acrylics or oil (no watercolor). Focusing on drawing, value, color temperature, and mark making with the brush and palette knife to create a painting in two classes.

Beginning Watercolor

Robert Leedy will introduce you to the joy of watercolor and erase all fears of the medium! Basic technique, color theory and color mixing will be explored along with all the elements and principles that make up a successful watercolor painting. Students will also develop a verbal dialogue through informative and helpful critiques. The emphasis is on individual instruction. Students will paint from a still life set up in class.

Plein Air Watercolor with Robert Leedy

Watercolor is the perfect medium for painting outdoors or en plein aire! Students will learn how to edit and simplify the subject matter while getting help with washes, brushwork, and value. There will be an emphasis on working with light and bold color through the use of fluid washes and retaining the white of the paper. Open to Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced students. Individual attention will be stressed. Using the Cultural Center studio as a base in case of bad weather, students will meet weekly at predetermined locations around town.

Painting in Pastel

This class is suitable to all skill levels. It is assumed all artists attending have a basic understanding of color and drawing ability. We will explore the options of painting with Soft Pastels (NOT OIL PASTELS) The instructor will offer demo in class and students will receive instruction as needed. Students are encouraged to interact and learn from each other.

Learning from the Masters –Acrylic or Oil Painting

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Years ago artist learned by going to museums and copying the Master works they saw in front of them. This class will revive that classic tradition. Students will be able to use the traditional medium of oil or the contemporary medium of acrylic.  We will look at master works by Van Gogh, Matisse, and Gauguin and you will then choose which painting of theirs you would like to learn from. Our goal is to learn, and take away from their works various techniques and ideas we can then put into our own as we create a master copy. Previous recent experience painting in your desired medium is required. * Class will include demonstration and handouts which is included in tuition.

Drawing skills are the most important tools needed to pursue any artistic venture including watercolor, oil, acrylic, sculpture or ceramics. Drawing is the first and foremost most important foundation to build on. You will learn something new each week, and feel encourage to keep going. Mixed Media Drawing

You have always wanted to learn about other mediums to draw with. You have some skills already, but you need to build on those and would like to try different techniques and approaches. Then this is perfect for you.  We will be combining methods and using new materials like watercolor and pen and ink for a mix of painterly drawings. We will also learn to use charcoal and conte pencils effectively. We will look at other artists who use these mediums and draw inspiration from them. Class includes demos and handouts which is include in tuition fee.

Independent Studio Opportunities

Open Studio – Pottery
No Instruction Offered
Wednesdays, 10 – 4pm  

Work independently in our pottery studio.  Artists can use four potter's wheels, sculpture stands, and tables to create independently. Kiln use available with prior consent with $35 firing fee.

 

Open Studio – Figure
No Instruction Offered
Saturdays, 11am – 2pm

Figure Open Studio offers studio space for artists interested in figurative study to create independent of instruction, working from a life model.  Figure Open Studio sessions will begin with two five minute warm-up drawing sessions, then a ten minute warm-up drawing session.  The rest of the time will be dedicated to one pose.  Artists can use any medium but photography.  The poses will be a range of standing, sitting and lying down.  Tables, chairs, stools, and easels are provided, just bring your own supplies!  $10 model fee.
