The landmark publication, 1¢ Life created by artist and poet Walasee Ting, was a dream of Tings that came to life. His vision was to bring artists together.  The graphic publication of 1¢ LIFE did just that.  It was a collaboraton between poets and artists, cought somewhere between abstract expressionism and pop-art.  They linked together in harmony, producing one of the most notable artist's books of the period.  Consisting of brilliant illustrations, which blend perfectly with Ting's orinigal poetry.  Now as a traveling exhibition coming to The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach on September 27th_ November 9th; this exhibition includes a total of 28 celebrated artists and over 55 works. It includes original works from world famous artists, such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

One featured experience, scheduled for Friday, November 8th from 6:00-8:00 p.m., is Ekphrastic poetry with Kimmy Schander. Ekphrastic is a form of poetry writing, where the poet focuses on and draws inspiration from a work of art. It is a vivid account of a selected work of art that the poet narrates using great details. These poems are often rhetorical in nature, reflecting on the deeper meaning of the visual art or sculpture.

Speaking with Kimmy about her upcoming collaboration with The Cultural Center-which will be her first-she has great hopes for what the participants of this Ekphrastic poetry class will walk away with:

I hope to shed some new light on an old technique of writing an ekphrastic poem. I hope to provide poets with new ways of looking more deeply at an object, and furthering their explorations of how a specific work of art sparks, within us, new insights, surprising feelings, and intellectual connections.

-Kimmy Van Kooken

Poetry is at the heart of the upcoming exhibition, 1¢ LIFE. It can be said that the genesis behind this publication steams from a creative outburst in which Ting wrote sixty-one poems on the pages of the book in an assortment of typefaces and shaped forms.

I wrote 61 poems in ’61 in a small black room like coffin, inside room only salami, whisky, sexy photographs from Times Square. No Bible, no cookbook, no telephone book, no check-book. Two short fingers, typing talking about World & Garbage, You & I, Egg & Earth.

-Walasse Ting

Unlike ekphrastic poetry, which focuses on a visual, physical work of art. Ting uses the technique of beat poetry form of a prior generation; with the focus being on things unseen but felt. Topics such as racism, identity politics, economics, and carnal desire were his inspiration. The poems are written in Pidgin English and shed light on Ting’s everyday experiences in a stream of consciousness put on paper. Brilliantly illustrated lithographs from 28 celebrated artists that echo his fiery poetry, pair perfectly with their riots of color coming together to form this landmark publication.
