Celebrating Beethoven: Can You Feel It?

The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a variety of events, exhibits, and other programs. The interactive musical exhibit, Loving Beethoven, will be the next addition to this milestone anniversary event. These two experiences go together beautifully. Not only is it the anniversary celebration of the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach, but 2020 marks the 250th birthday celebration of Ludwig Van Beethoven!

During his lifetime, Ludwig Van Beethoven experienced hardships from early childhood to adulthood that helped to shape the greatness of his musical compositions and abilities. When he was young, it is said that his father had an almost stage-like presence in his life. Wanting his son to aspire to the likes of Mozart, it was whispered at campfire chats that Beethoven would be locked in a pantry after being beaten by his father for missing a note. The stern rule over Beethoven’s musical practice time reaped amazing benefits for his personal style of playing and composing. As the nineteenth century came to an end, the sound in Beethoven’s ears came to an end as well. At the speculated age of forty-five (toward the end of Beethoven’s life), he lost his hearing. He became deaf in both ears, leading to great angst and a new way of composing his music. To adapt to the new situation, Beethoven would rest his ear atop the piano keys to hear the vibrations, making his music come to life for him.

The interactive musical experience and visual art exhibition featuring the musical sheets and composition style of Ludwig Van Beethoven is just around the corner for the Cultural Center. Visitors to the historic first coast of Florida and the locals (new and old) of the Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee communities are invited to take part in the experience. Loving Beethoven, the 250th Birthday Anniversary, “In the Mind of the Genius” musical experience arrives on March 6th, 2020. Tickets and tours are available for purchase in advance or at the door. There is a suggested donation of $5.00 and children under the age of five get in free. Please contact Jennifer Jordan, Community Connections Director, for more information at 904.280.0614, extension 1202.

What should visitors expect at the exhibit? Loving Beethoven, from Interexpo in Malaga, Spain will feature six musical pods with video art entitled, “In the Mind of the Genius” projecting in the background. The musical pods installation was created by the design team at MIMMA, Museo Interactivo de La Musica Malaga. Beethoven’s musical pods are meant to help the viewer feel the vibration of the music the way the composer felt and heard the music as he created it. Each pod has its own unique experience for the viewer to feel, featuring musical vibrations of innovation, experience, immersion, sensory, memory, and interactive. The experience comes to life when the viewer hugs the pod, allowing the vibrations to be heard and the lights of the pod to change with each touch. The green-lit pods feature the Innovation and Experience exhibit. The pink-lit pods feature the Immersive and Sensory exhibit. The blue-lit pods feature the Memorable and Interactive exhibit. This creates quite the user experience as almost musical therapy type, as each music pod can be seen as an innovative musical therapy tool. “We are grateful to our Chairs Robert and Monica Jacoby for sponsoring this special exhibit which benefits children and adults of all ages,” said Donna Guzzo, Executive Director.

“I am hoping our guests will leave our exhibition having experienced something they have never experienced before, a new way of 'listening' to music, the way Beethoven did!”

- Jennifer Jordan, Community Connections Director

Over the past 250 years Beethoven’s music has resonated through our ears and mind. He has become an icon in music and history, especially since he composed music through the use of sound vibrations after the loss of his sense of hearing. The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach is known for its groundbreaking musical therapy program, Sound Connections®. The music therapy program was the first music therapy outreach program of its kind in Florida’s First Coast public school system. In 2006, music therapist Minda Gordon volunteered her time to provide music for children with special needs. Eventually, the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra was able to obtain funding for 10 hours per week of music therapy in ESE classrooms. This was made possible through the generosity of the Woodcock Foundation for the Appreciation of the Art. Continuing in celebration of the Cultural Center’s 25th anniversary and Beethoven’s 250th birthday anniversary, this year also marks a milestone for the Sound Connections® Music Therapy program. Through much generosity, this landmark outreach program now reaches the ears, minds, and hearts of the public-school system in historic St. Augustine at Webster Elementary School. We hope everyone will join us in celebrating Beethoven, Sound Connections®, and the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach through this unique interactive experience which allows people of all ages to grow closer to music.

Picture4 Charlotte Warder is an intern at The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach. She is studying Art History at The University of North Florida. While writing this blog post, she wrote all her notes in a notebook, the way Beethoven communicated with people after going deaf. She also typed with her head resting atop the keyboard to “feel the vibrations.” in the way Beethoven composed his music.

This exhibition is sponsored graciously by Robert and Monica Jacoby, Joseph P. Bryant, and Advanced Disposal.
